殷商甲骨卜醉所見之巫術 (7) Graduate Institute, where I have had the privilege of studying oracle bone inscriptions (jiaguwen)and shamanism with Professor Hsu Chin-hsiung.Professor Hsu's more than three decades of work in oracle bone inscriptions has resulted in great contributions to the current understanding of the oracle bone inscriptions and the culture that produced them. This book entitled References to Shamanism in the Shang Dynasty Oracle Bones in which I look at and analyze characters related to shamanism in the early written attestations within the context of general concepts and practices of shamanism. The body of words relating to shamanism is extensive, attesting to the importance of this practice in ancient China, especially in Shang Dynasty, and suggesting much about its specific forms.Chinese shamanistic practices mentioned in early texts include exorcism, prophecy, divination, ritual ceremony, medical treatment,rain-making and the interpretation of dreams.Dancing seems to have been one of their defining features and an important part of their religious practice.Within this wide range of practices,we can see a rough division between dissociative religious practices, such as the summoning of deities on the one hand and more technical (and teachable)aspects, such as divination and ritual performance on the other.Such a possible division between the technical/scriptural and the phenomenological/ecstatic is clearly of interest in the context of the oracle bone inscriptions and the
(8) PREFACE early written attestations. My analysis of the lexicographical record also forms the basis for my discussion of a number of other characteristics of ancient China shamanism, including the changes over time in the position of the shaman and the cultural contributions that he made. For the research, the oracle bone inscriptions and other materials, for example, archaeological record, bronze inscriptions, anthropology and religion, have provided me with an excellent basis in shamanistic practice. My ultimate goal is to make a contribution to the understanding of the earliest phases of the culture of my homeland,Korea, through the comparison of the early shamanistic cultures in both Korea and China.I hope that the inquiry will enable me to shed some light on the poorly attested period of Korean cultural formation before the impact of contact with the expanding Chinese cultural sphere. In addition,I believe that this book entitled References to Shamanism in the Shang Dynasty Oracle Bones would be fruitful in better understanding of the important religious practice in its various early forms. 檀紀四千三百三十六年三月孟春之際 冬斑 謹藏於臺大宿齋
